Westpac statement to CSV

What a Westpac statement looks like, and what we do with it

Dates are day first and two digit, written 23/01/26.

We read them day first and write them as 2026-01-23.

Debit and credit are separate columns, with a running balance to the right of them.

Each row becomes one signed amount, checked against the balance beside it.

Long descriptions wrap onto a second line. On Osko payments that second line is often just a date, such as 14 Feb 2026.

We join the wrapped line to the row above it.

The transaction list opens with a STATEMENT OPENING BALANCE row.

We take the opening balance from it and leave it out of the export.

The first page prints Opening Balance, Total Credits, Total Debits and Closing Balance.

We compare our totals with the printed ones, so a missed row shows up.

We have tested one real Westpac Choice statement: five pages, 78 transactions, every running balance matched, and the printed total credits and debits matched to the cent.

We have only tested the Westpac Choice transaction account statement. Scanned or photographed statements do not work, because there is no text in them to read.

Once it is converted, the import steps for each accounting package are the same for every bank.
