Questions
The questions that apply to every statement, whichever bank it came from. Each bank’s page and each format’s page answers its own as well.
Before you start
Is my statement uploaded anywhere?
No. The statement is read in your browser, on your computer. Nothing in it is sent to us or to anyone else.
Which banks does it work with?
Any bank whose statement has a date column and an amount column. The converter reads the columns on the page, not a template for each bank. We have tested 40 banks in Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Canada, United States and Netherlands on real statements, and each bank’s page says what we found.
Does it handle scanned statements?
Yes, as a PDF, JPG, PNG or WebP. The text is read off the picture by OCR in your browser, and the file never leaves your computer. The first scan takes longer while the reader loads. OCR can misread a figure, so a scan is checked like any other statement. If it prints no running balance, no totals and no closing balance, nothing can check the figures, so the download is held as it is for a failed check, and you look the figures over first. A date misread within the statement period passes every check, so a date OCR was unsure of is marked for you to compare with the scan. A PDF downloaded from online banking is more reliable than a scan. More about scanned statements.
What can I export?
Excel and CSV for a spreadsheet. Xero CSV for Xero. QBO or the QuickBooks CSV for QuickBooks. OFX for MYOB. QIF for Quicken, and a QIF with its dates day first for Reckon. Twinfield CSV for Twinfield. MT940 for accounting software that reads it, as much of it in the Netherlands and Germany does. The Sage, FreeAgent and Wave CSVs for those packages, and a CSV in a layout you set for anything else. How to import each one is on its own page.
Is it free, and do I need an account?
Excel and CSV are free for a whole statement at a time, with no limit on how many. Premium adds every other format, a CSV in a layout of your own, payee names with rules that set the payee and category, the working paper, part of a statement, several statements joined into one, and downloading every open statement at once. Neither needs an account: Premium is a licence key, which you paste into the page or activate from the email it comes in, and your browser keeps it. The pricing page lists each format and the price.
Using the converter and Premium
What does a red row mean?
The row’s amount, added to the balance before it, does not give the balance printed beside it. The sheet shows both figures. The download is held until you correct the row or choose to download anyway.
The columns were read wrongly. Can I fix it?
Yes. Click Pick the columns, then click one cell in the date column and one in the amount column. Add the money-in and balance columns if the statement has them. The statement is read again from those columns, and they are saved for that file.
Can I do several statements at once?
Yes. Drop several at once. Each opens in its own tab with its own dates, currency and corrections, and each is checked in full. A file holding several accounts opens each account in a tab of its own, and a file of one account’s months reads as one statement, checked that each month opens where the last one closed. Downloading them one at a time is free. Downloading all of them at once comes with Premium, and a statement that failed a check is left out of that download.
One row came out wrong. Can I fix that row?
Yes. Edit its date, description or amount in the table, or remove a row the statement does not have. The balance is checked again with your figure. Corrections are saved for that file, so opening it again picks them up.
Does it remember what I have converted?
Your browser keeps a list of the statements you have converted: the period, the number of transactions, and whether the checks passed. It holds no transactions and never leaves this browser. You can clear it at any time, and should on a computer that is not yours.
How do I cancel Premium?
At link.com, or from the receipt email. Stripe’s Link holds the subscription, and signing in takes the email address you paid with and a code it sends you. The key keeps working until the end of the period you paid for. If you cannot get in, write to us and we cancel it for you.
