Bank statement PDF to Twinfield

Twinfield imports an MT940 only from the banks it lists. For any other bank it reads a CSV through a template you make once. Drop the PDF statement, and we check the rows against the running balance, totals or closing balance your bank printed, then write that CSV.

Twinfield CSV comes with Premium. Excel and CSV are free for a whole statement at a time, with no account and no limit on how many. See what Premium costs.

What is a Twinfield CSV file?

Twinfield, Wolters Kluwer’s accounting software, imports a bank statement as an MT940, a camt.053 or a CSV. Its help lists the banks whose MT940 it reads, and says an MT940 from a bank not on that list cannot be imported.

For any other bank it reads a CSV through an import template. You make the template once, giving each column of the file the Twinfield field it holds, and Twinfield keeps it for every later file laid out the same way. It finds the bank account by the IBAN in the file.

The Twinfield CSV is that file: one row for each transaction, and each column headed by the name of the Twinfield field it goes into, so making the template is a matter of reading the headings.

What is inside a Twinfield CSV file

This is the whole file for a statement of three transactions, as the converter writes it.

Eigen IBAN,
The heading row. Eigen IBAN is the account’s own IBAN, Valuta the currency, Afschriftdatum the date, Debet/Credit which way the money went, Bedrag the amount and Omschrijving 1 the description. They are the names the template gives Twinfield’s fields.
NL91ABNA0417164300,
One transaction: the IBAN, the currency, the date written 20260114, D for money out or C for money in, the amount with no sign and a point before the cents, then the description as printed.

What a Twinfield CSV file cannot do

The template is made once, by you.
Twinfield has templates ready for some banks’ own CSV files, and none for this one, so the first import asks you to give each of the six columns its field. Its help walks through the screen.
No opening or closing balance.
A row of the CSV is a transaction and nothing else, so unlike an MT940 the file states no balance for Twinfield to check. Compare the balance Twinfield shows after the import with the closing balance on the statement.
A booking keeps 40 characters of the description.
The bank line holds the description whole, but Twinfield cuts the description of the booking made from it to 40 characters.

Importing it into Twinfield

Download the Twinfield CSV

  1. In Twinfield, add the bank account under the IBAN the statement prints, if it is not there already.
  2. Open the file manager (Bestandsbeheer), choose Uploaden, pick the file and choose Uploaden again.
  3. From the action menu at the start of the file’s row, choose Importeren.
  4. The first time only, choose Nieuw to make a template. Name it, leave the separator on Komma and the text indicator on double quotes, set Kopregel to 1 and Eerste dataregel to 2, and give each column the Waarde its heading names. When every Test is green, choose Opslaan.
  5. Choose the template, keep Via elektronische bankafschriften, and choose Verwerken. The statement waits under Kas & Banken, Bankafschriften.

Twinfield keeps the template for your whole environment and offers it for any file with the same six columns, so every statement after the first is the upload, Importeren and Verwerken. The headings are the Dutch names of the fields Twinfield’s template offers. This is the layout Twinfield’s help shows passing its template test: import one statement and check it before you rely on it.

How we write a Twinfield CSV from a PDF statement

We read the transactions off the PDF and check each one against the running balance the statement prints beside it, and the totals against the ones it prints at the foot. A row that does not agree is shown in red with both figures, and the download is held until you have seen it. Then the file is written in your browser, like this:

The headings are Twinfield’s own field names.
Eigen IBAN, Valuta, Afschriftdatum, Debet/Credit, Bedrag and Omschrijving 1, as the template names them, so each column goes to the field of the same name.
Dates are written 20260114.
Year, month and day with nothing between them, as the example file in Twinfield’s help writes them.
The amount carries no sign, and D or C beside it says which way it went.
D is money out of the account and C money in. The amount has a point before the cents and no thousands separator, as 1234.56.
Every row carries the account’s IBAN.
Twinfield finds the bank account by it. We take the IBAN the statement labels as its own, where its check digits agree. A statement that prints no IBAN cannot become a Twinfield CSV, and the button says so.
The currency is the statement’s.
We read it off the statement, or you choose it where the statement names none, and the button says which it will write.
The description is the words the statement printed.
Whole, in Omschrijving 1. A description holding a comma or a quote mark is set in double quotes, which is the text indicator the template starts with.

Every format holds the same checked transactions. The other files we write are on the import page.

Questions

Is my statement uploaded anywhere?

No. The statement is read in your browser, on your computer. Nothing in it is sent to us or to anyone else.

Why not an MT940 for Twinfield?

Twinfield reads an MT940 only from the banks on its list, and its help says an MT940 from any other bank cannot be imported. Ours is written by Ledgaroo, not by your bank, so the CSV is the file to use: it is the route Twinfield gives for a bank it does not list.

Do I make a template for every statement?

No. You make it on the first import, and Twinfield offers it again for every file with the same columns, which every Twinfield CSV we write has.

Does it handle scanned statements?

Yes, as a PDF, JPG, PNG or WebP. The text is read off the picture by OCR in your browser, and the file never leaves your computer. The first scan takes longer while the reader loads. OCR can misread a figure, so a scan is checked like any other statement. If it prints no running balance, no totals and no closing balance, nothing can check the figures, so the download is held as it is for a failed check, and you look the figures over first. A date misread within the statement period passes every check, so a date OCR was unsure of is marked for you to compare with the scan. A PDF downloaded from online banking is more reliable than a scan. More about scanned statements.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

Excel and CSV are free for a whole statement at a time, with no limit on how many. Premium adds every other format, a CSV in a layout of your own, payee names with rules that set the payee and category, the working paper, part of a statement, several statements joined into one, and downloading every open statement at once. Neither needs an account: Premium is a licence key, which you paste into the page or activate from the email it comes in, and your browser keeps it. The pricing page lists each format and the price.
