Scanned bank statement to CSV
Drop the scan as a PDF, JPG, PNG or WebP. Each image is read as one page. OCR reads the figures on your computer, and every row is checked against the balances the statement prints, because OCR can misread a figure.
Reading a scan is free. A PDF downloaded from online banking is more reliable, because it holds the figures as text.
How a scan is read and checked
- The scan is read on your computer.
- The reader is downloaded to your browser the first time you drop a scan, about 16 MB, and the pages are read there. The picture of your statement is not sent anywhere.
- Each page is judged on its own.
- A page that is one picture is read by OCR, and a page with text in it is read as text. So a downloaded statement with one scanned page in it, or a scan with a stamp across it, is read whole, and we say which pages came from a scan.
- A misread amount breaks a check.
- Every row is held against the running balance beside it, and the totals against the ones the statement prints. A 3 read as an 8 does not add up, so the row is flagged and the download waits.
- A scan with nothing to check is held.
- If the statement prints no running balance, no totals and no closing balance, nothing would catch a misread figure. The download is held as it is for a failed check, so you look the rows over first.
- A date that was hard to read is marked.
- No balance can catch a wrong date. Where OCR was unsure of one, the row is marked for you to compare with the scan.
- Pages of cheque images give no rows.
- They are read like any other page, which costs a few seconds each, and nothing on them is taken for a transaction.
A page takes about six seconds in Chrome on a desktop computer, and the first one about eleven while the reader starts. We have not timed it on a phone.
Questions
Is my statement uploaded anywhere?
No. The statement is read in your browser, on your computer. Nothing in it is sent to us or to anyone else.
Can I drop a photo of my statement?
Yes, as a JPG, PNG or WebP, or as a PDF. Each image opens as one page, and separate images open as separate statements. A phone’s scanning app gives a flatter, sharper page than its camera does.
How reliable is reading a scan?
Less reliable than a downloaded PDF, which is why a scan is checked the same way. A misread amount breaks the running balance or the totals, and a row that was missed leaves the totals short. Expect to correct some rows in the table, and more of them on a poor scan.
How long does a scan take?
About six seconds a page in Chrome on a desktop computer. The first page takes about eleven, and before it the reader is downloaded, about 16 MB.
My PDF is a scan, but I can select the text in it. What happens?
Your scanner already read the page and stored the text under the picture. We read that text as we would any PDF’s, and the checks catch a figure the scanner misread.
Is it free, and do I need an account?
Excel and CSV are free for a whole statement at a time, with no limit on how many. Premium adds every other format, a CSV in a layout of your own, payee names with rules that set the payee and category, the working paper, part of a statement, several statements joined into one, and downloading every open statement at once. Neither needs an account: Premium is a licence key, which you paste into the page or activate from the email it comes in, and your browser keeps it. The pricing page lists each format and the price.
