U.S. Bank statement to CSV

Drop the U.S. Bank PDF as you downloaded it. It is converted on your computer, and we compare the totals with the ones U.S. Bank printed and check that the rows carry the opening balance to the closing one. Then download it for your accounting software or a spreadsheet.

Getting the PDF out of U.S. Bank

  1. In online banking, select Accounts from the menu at the top.
  2. Select the Document type you’d like to view.
  3. Choose the account from the dropdown menu.
  4. Select a different document year for older statements.
  5. Select the link for the statement to view, print or download it.

Business and personal accounts have separate online banking profiles at U.S. Bank. E-statements stay in digital banking for seven years.

A business account owner can give a Shared Access delegate their monthly deposit account and credit card statements, full account number included, and the delegate sees the whole statement history.

Paper statements bring several accounts together in one combined statement. Enrolling for e-statements separates them, one statement per account.

From U.S. Bank’s own help: How do I view, print and download electronic statements and other documents?, What can a Shared Access user see and do?, Do e-statements look like my paper statements?.

What a U.S. Bank statement looks like, and what we do with it

Each account begins with an Account Summary, a column of # Items beside each figure, and then a section for each line of it. Other Deposits, Card Withdrawals and Other Withdrawals share four columns, Date, Description of Transaction, Ref Number and Amount, and the checks come last, under Checks Presented Conventionally. Card purchases are grouped by card number and subtotalled, and money out carries a minus after the figure. A Balance Summary of daily Ending Balances follows, "Balances only appear for days reflecting change". A page or two of INFORMATION YOU SHOULD KNOW and a BALANCE YOUR ACCOUNT worksheet can come before the first transaction.

The Account Summary splits money out into Card Withdrawals, Other Withdrawals and Checks Paid, each with a count of items and the amount followed by a minus.
We read a trailing minus as money out, add the three, and compare the sum with our money out and Other Deposits with our money in.
Dates are written Apr 3, with the month and the day set as separate pieces of text.
We read the two as one date, so Apr 3 becomes 2020-04-03.
A card purchase runs over three lines: the type with the purchase date as six digits after "On", month, day and year run together, then the merchant and a REF #, then the card number masked with asterisks.
We join all three into one description and date the row by the day it was posted, not the day of purchase.
Checks Presented Conventionally sets two checks across each line, each with its number, date, Ref Number and amount, and the checks appear again as images at the end.
We read each check once, from the list, with its number first in the description.
The Statement Period sits flush right in a narrow box, broken over three or four lines ("Period: May 1," then "2024 through" and so on), beneath notices that name dates after the period ends.
We put the broken lines back together and take the period from them, never from a date in the notices.

What this page is based on

Two files of Silver Business Checking. One is April 2020 for a club: its money in matched Other Deposits, its money out matched the three withdrawal lines added together, and the net of the rows closed the gap between the opening and closing balances. The other was attached to a local government commission’s agenda and holds May and June 2024 for two accounts, the checking account and an interest-bearing account U.S. Bank calls Municipal Investor. Each account opened in its own tab, the checking account’s rows reached the closing balance of its June statement, and in both accounts June began on the balance May closed on, though May’s statement ends on Friday the 31st and June’s begins on Monday the 3rd.

The Platinum and Gold Business Checking Packages, Business Essentials and the Nonprofit Checking Account are business accounts we hold no statement from. Likewise untried: a personal Bank Smartly Checking account, any U.S. Bank business Visa card, and statements pulled from SinglePoint Essentials.

Once it is converted, the import steps for each accounting package are the same for every bank.

Questions

U.S. Bank has a CSV download. When is a statement still the answer?

For the last three years you may not need to: U.S. Bank’s help says online banking downloads that much history as CSV, QFX or QBO. For anything older, that help points you to your statements, and e-statements cover seven years. A statement also prints the Account Summary, so a converted month can be proved against the bank’s own figures.

Our PDF holds two accounts and two months. Do I split it first?

No. The file we tested this on was published with a commission’s agenda and held May and June for a checking account and an interest-bearing one. Each account opened in its own tab, its May and June joined into one run of rows, and each June was checked against the balance May closed on.

What is the Analysis Service Charge Detail at the end of the statement?

U.S. Bank describes it as the section listing wire fees, statement fees and transaction fees. The April 2020 statement we tested used it for March, a month earlier than its own period, under "Account Analysis Activity for". Nothing from it goes into the file; its figures are fees worked out, not transactions on this statement.

Privacy, scans and price work the same for every bank, and the home page answers them.
