RBC Royal Bank statement to CSV

Drop the RBC Royal Bank PDF as you downloaded it. It is converted on your computer, and we check every row against the running balance and check that the rows carry the opening balance to the closing one. Then download it for your accounting software or a spreadsheet.

Getting the PDF out of RBC Royal Bank

  1. In RBC Online Banking, from the Account Balances page, select Statements/Documents.
  2. Under Your Documents on the left, select Account Documents (or Fee Statements).

For Business Banking clients only accounts switched to electronic documents are listed. eDocuments stay available for up to 7 years, though some Custom Statements go back only 18 months.

Once an account is closed its eDocuments can no longer be reached, so RBC tells you to download the ones you need before closing it.

eStatements carry no charge with RBC Online Banking for business or RBC Express, and RBC says they contain the same information as paper statements. A paper statement is charged for, more with cheque image pages, and RBC points businesses that want to delegate banking to others to RBC Express.

What a RBC Royal Bank statement looks like, and what we do with it

The Business Account Statement opens with an Account Summary for this Period, then Account Activity Details, headed Date, Description, Cheques & Debits ($), Deposits & Credits ($) and Balance ($). No amount has a sign, the first row after the Opening balance line is the earliest, and a table that runs over carries on under "Account Activity Details - continued" with its headings repeated. RBC’s sample personal chequing statement has the same five columns, headed Withdrawals ($), Deposits ($) and Balance ($) instead.

The period starts on the last day of the month before and ends on the last day of the statement’s own month, both spelled out with the year, while the rows are dated 05 Feb with no year.
We give each row its year from the period, so a February row is never read as part of the month the period starts in.
Only the first transaction of a day carries its date and only the last carries a balance, so a day of a mobile cheque deposit and three Online Banking payments prints one of each.
We carry the date down to the rows beneath it and check the day’s transactions together against the balance at its end.
The Account Summary is set out as a sum: the opening balance, a plus line for Total deposits & credits with their count in brackets, a minus line for Total cheques & debits with theirs, and an equals sign before the closing balance.
We take the opening and closing balances from it and check that the rows carry one to the other. We do not yet compare our totals with its two middle lines.
Under the Closing balance, an "Account Fees:" line adds up the Monthly fee and the INTERAC e-Transfer fee already listed in the table.
We leave it out, so the fees are counted once, on the days they were taken.

What this page is based on

Two statements. One is a Royal Business Community Account statement from a not-for-profit association, a month in 2018 over two pages, which balanced at the end of every day and took its opening figure through to the closing one. The other is RBC’s own published eStatement sample, a personal chequing account (Signature Plus) from 2004, of which we hold the first of its two pages: every row on that page reconciled, though its summary’s totals cover the page we do not have.

Statements from RBC Express, a Monthly Business Fees Statement, and RBC’s business cards such as the Avion Visa Business or the Business Cash Back Mastercard are all outside what we have tested, and so is the Commercial U.S. Dollar Visa.

Once it is converted, the import steps for each accounting package are the same for every bank.

Questions

Should I convert the Fee Statement as well as the account statement?

Not for the account we tested. RBC lists Fee Statements beside Account Documents and describes Monthly Business Fees Statements as coming in addition to the account statement. On the Royal Business Community Account statement we tested, the Monthly fee and the INTERAC e-Transfer fee were already rows in the account’s table, so converting a fee statement as well could count them twice.

Does it read RBC personal chequing statements?

On the evidence we have, the table, yes. RBC’s own sample eStatement for a Signature Plus personal chequing account matched its balances on every row of the one page we hold. Its Account Summary, "Total deposits into your account" and "Total withdrawals from your account", covers both pages, so with half the statement it could not match, which is the check doing its job. A complete personal statement is still to come.

Why don’t my RBC Online Banking payments name who I paid?

Because the statement doesn’t. RBC prints "Online Banking payment" and a four-digit number, and a mobile cheque deposit the same way, with no payee. We export exactly what is printed, so who received each payment is something only your payment records can add.

Privacy, scans and price work the same for every bank, and the home page answers them.
