Rabobank statement to CSV

Drop the Rabobank PDF as you downloaded it. It is converted on your computer, and we compare the totals with the ones Rabobank printed and check that the rows carry the opening balance to the closing one. Then download it for your accounting software or a spreadsheet.

Getting the PDF out of Rabobank

  1. In Rabo Internetbankieren, choose Afschrift betaalrekening downloaden, then Rekeningafschriften.
  2. Choose the account number and the period.
  3. Click the statement you want, and it opens as a PDF.

A large download can take a while; Rabobank puts a notice on your overview page once it is ready.

A Rabo BedrijfsSpaarRekening is downloaded under Afschrift spaarrekening downloaden instead, where you pick the account, a Downloadformaat and the period. If the period holds too many transactions the download fails, and a shorter period or fewer accounts gets it through.

Statements under Documenten go back seven years, and downloaded transactions up to eight. Nothing nine years old or more can be downloaded or requested.

Without internet banking, or once the account is closed, Rabobank posts a paper copy within five working days.

What a Rabobank statement looks like, and what we do with it

The Rekeningafschrift is in Dutch. A panel at the top right gives the date the statement was made, the page as "1 van 2", the period from Datum vanaf to Datum tot en met, and Beginsaldo and Eindsaldo, with the IBAN, the BIC and the two totals on the line below. The table is headed Rentedatum, Type, Tegenrekening, Naam/omschrijving, Bedrag af (debet) and Bedrag bij (credit): every amount is unsigned in one of the two money columns, rows run oldest first, and no row prints a balance.

The opening and closing balances, Beginsaldo and Eindsaldo, sit in a panel above the table, each figure under its label, and the account holder’s address can run between a label and its figure.
We read each figure from under its label, carry the opening balance through every row, and check that the rows arrive at the closing balance.
Amounts put a full stop between the thousands and a comma before the cents, and a balance in credit ends in CR, as 1.234,56 CR.
We read that as 1,234.56 in credit.
Rows are dated 21-01 in the Rentedatum column, day first, with no year.
We take the year from the period in the panel, Datum vanaf and Datum tot en met, not from the later date the statement was made.
Under each row’s name and description, a last line gives its Verwerkingsdatum, the day Rabobank processed it, which can be a day or two after the Rentedatum; a monthly Kosten row also names the period its charges cover.
We date the row by its Rentedatum, which is the date in the table, and keep the Verwerkingsdatum and any period at the end of the description.
Money out and money in are separate columns, Bedrag af and Bedrag bij, and the panel prints both totals, Totaal afgeschreven and Totaal bijgeschreven.
We add up each column and compare it with the total Rabobank printed.
One file can hold a current account and a BedrijfsSpaarRekening one after the other, each with its own IBAN and its own panel.
We split the file at the second IBAN, and each account opens in a tab of its own.

What this page is based on

Three Rekeningafschriften for Zakelijke rekeningen, from 2021 to 2025: a foundation’s half-year that also carries its Rabo BedrijfsSpaarRekening, and two bankrupt companies’ estate accounts published by their trustees, the longer of them seven pages and over seventy rows. Each account matched its Totaal afgeschreven and Totaal bijgeschreven to the cent, and its rows took the Beginsaldo to the Eindsaldo. The savings account split off on its own and passed the same two checks.

An older Rekeningafschrift from 2015, in Rabobank’s layout of the time, reads its rows but has had its balances blacked out, so nothing could be checked, and a scanned one gave our OCR too little to read. Neither proves anything here. No private Rabobank account’s statement, and none from Rabo Business Banking, has been through the parser either.

Once it is converted, the import steps for each accounting package are the same for every bank.

Questions

Rabobank already downloads MT940 and CAMT.053. Why convert the PDF?

If you can still log in, the download is the more direct route: Rabobank offers CAMT.053, CSV, MT940 Structured and its other formats for up to eight years of transactions. Convert the PDF when the PDF is what you have, such as statements an earlier treasurer or an accountant saved, or a closed account’s, and when you want the totals Rabobank printed checked before the file reaches your books.

Which date does my Rabobank export use, the Rentedatum or the Verwerkingsdatum?

The Rentedatum, the date in the table’s first column. The Verwerkingsdatum printed under each description stays in the description, so you can still see that a charge dated the first of the month was processed on the third.

Our Rabobank statement covers six months. Is that a problem?

No. The foundation’s statement we tested ran from January to late June in one Rekeningafschrift over three pages, and its totals still matched. We read the period from Datum vanaf and Datum tot en met, so a row in June gets the right year however long the period is.

Can I still get statements for a Rabobank account we have closed?

Not online. Rabobank’s help sends you to a paper copy once the account is closed, posted within five working days, and a paper copy has to be scanned before we can read it. Save the PDFs from Documenten before you close the account.

Privacy, scans and price work the same for every bank, and the home page answers them.
