NatWest statement to CSV

Drop the NatWest PDF as you downloaded it. It is converted on your computer, and we check every row against the running balance and compare the totals with the ones NatWest printed. Then download it for your accounting software or a spreadsheet.

Getting the PDF out of NatWest

  1. Log in to Online Banking.
  2. Select Statements & transactions from the main menu.
  3. Under the Your Statements heading, select Statements.
  4. Choose the account, and the year in the time period dropdown.
  5. Select the statement cycle link, and the statement downloads as a PDF.

Online Banking holds up to 7 years of statements, each usually ready one working day after it is produced. A period with no transactions has no statement.

Bankline keeps statements in Statements and documents, under the Accounts tab, for users with View balance and View transaction access. Bankline has kept them as PDFs since July 2023, building up to seven years.

What a NatWest statement looks like, and what we do with it

An Online Banking statement puts a Summary at the top right, from Previous Balance to New Balance with the IBAN beneath, and lists the month under Date, Description, Paid In(£), Withdrawn(£) and Balance(£), oldest first, a balance on every row. The Bankline statement we tested is another document: headed Bankline, with Date, Narrative, Type, Debit, Credit and Ledger balance, full dd/mm/yyyy dates, and OPENING BALANCE and a Totals row at the foot of its last page.

The money headings are printed as one run of text, "Paid In(£) Withdrawn(£)".
We split it into a money-in column and a money-out column by where the figures sit.
In an Online Banking statement, dates carry no year, written 09 MAR. Only the BROUGHT FORWARD line and the dates in the Summary name one.
Each row takes its year from the Period Covered.
Only the first transaction of a day carries a date, and one on the day of the BROUGHT FORWARD line has none of its own.
We carry each date down to the rows beneath it, starting from the BROUGHT FORWARD line.
A card transaction wraps onto a second line, and its amount and balance sit on that second line, beside the town and country of the merchant. The day of the purchase is in the description, run together with its month and year, a day or more before the date in the Date column.
We join both lines into one row, date it from the Date column, and keep the card’s own date in the description text.
A statement from Bankline lists the newest transaction first, under a CLOSING BALANCE line, with every balance marked Cr under the Ledger balance heading.
We reverse the rows into date order, treat Cr as in credit, and open from the OPENING BALANCE line at the foot of the last page.

What this page is based on

Four statements from parish and town councils, each a different account. Three came from Online Banking in 2025 and 2026: two Business Reserve Account statements, one holding a single interest payment, and a Current Account month of card payments, bill payments and direct debits. The fourth, from 2023, is a Business Current account printed from Bankline, seven pages and over a hundred transactions. Every row held against its balance, and each matched the totals it prints. Two were cut from council meeting packs before testing.

We have no statement yet for the NatWest Community account, Mettle by NatWest, a Business Credit Card or OneCard, or a personal account such as Select or Reward. Nor does this page cover Bankline’s CSV exports or its Statement Download service, which sends statement files on a schedule.

Once it is converted, the import steps for each accounting package are the same for every bank.

Questions

Bankline offers a statement and a transaction export. Which one did you test?

We can’t be sure. Ours is a Bankline printout headed "Statement for account", with the user who printed it named at the foot. Bankline’s help now offers PDF statements under Statements and documents and a PDF or CSV export of up to 15 months of transactions. We have seen neither, so convert the PDF you have; a misread row breaks the running balance and turns red.

Our NatWest statement is inside the council’s reconciliation pack. Can I drop the pack?

Cut the statement pages out first. Two of our NatWest statements came from meeting packs and passed every check as pages of their own. Opened whole, one pack, with reconciliation reports and more than one account’s bank pages, put another account’s interest row into the statement, and its checks failed.

Can the clerk download statements without being a signatory?

Online Banking registration lets a business add up to 10 delegated authorities to its account, and on Bankline the administrator grants View balance and View transaction access. NatWest’s paperless page adds that a downloaded statement can be shared with whoever needs it, accountants included.

Why might a NatWest balance be marked OD?

The Statement Abbreviations box on the second page says OD means Overdrawn. None of our NatWest statements was overdrawn, so a balance marked OD hasn’t been through the parser on a real one; if we misread it, the next row turns red.

Privacy, scans and price work the same for every bank, and the home page answers them.
