Metro Bank statement to CSV

Drop the Metro Bank PDF as you downloaded it. It is converted on your computer, and we check every row against the running balance, compare the totals with the ones Metro Bank printed and check that the rows carry the opening balance to the closing one. Then download it for your accounting software or a spreadsheet.

What a Metro Bank statement looks like, and what we do with it

A Metro statement is two documents in one PDF: two pages on charges, then the statement proper, two or three pages under the heading Metro Bank Community Account Statement. Its table reads Date, Transaction, Money out (£), Money in (£) and Balance (£), money out first, with every row dated in full, as 09 MAR 2024 with the month in capitals, and every row carrying a balance. Rows run oldest first, the statement number repeats at the top of each page, and the last page is notices about compensation and complaints.

The statement opens with a Summary of charges, listing each fee for the period, then Details of Transaction and Cash Charges, a table that counts the Card Purchases, Direct Debits and Outward Faster Payments with a Volume, a Price and a Charge.
We read none of it as a transaction. The rows start under Your transactions, on a later page.
A card purchase carries two dates: the day it reached the account in the Date column, and the day it was made in the description, after the words Card Purchase. A refund carries the date of the purchase it reverses, which can be months earlier.
We date the row by the Date column and keep the purchase date in the description, where it was printed.
A payment runs over two to four lines: its type and the start of the payee’s name, the rest of the name, the payee’s bank, then the reference. Where the bank is not given, the line reads NA.
We join them into one description, reference included, so two payments to the same payee on one day still read apart.
Your account summary sets the Opening balance, Total money in, Total money out and End balance beside the account number and sort code, and the table opens with Balance brought forward and ends with Closing Balance.
We start the running balance from Balance brought forward, check every row against it, and compare our money in and money out with the summary’s totals. Neither balance line is exported.

What this page is based on

Three Community Account statements: two months of a charity’s account, from 2022 and 2024, filed with its accounts on the charity register, and one month of a community group’s account from 2025, published in parish council papers. All three passed every check we run: each row against its balance, our totals against the summary’s, and Balance brought forward carried through to Closing Balance. The two from the charity, opened together, came out as one account with a break between them, which is right, since nineteen months separate them.

Metro’s Business Bank Account and Commercial Current Account, statements from Business Online Plus or Commercial Online Banking, Metro’s Business Credit Card, and its personal Current Account have not been seen by the parser.

Once it is converted, the import steps for each accounting package are the same for every bank.

Questions

Metro now calls it the Community Current Account. Will that statement read the same?

Metro’s page for clubs, societies and charities names the account the Community Current Account. All three statements we tested, the latest from 2025, are headed Metro Bank Community Account Statement, so we have not yet seen one printed under the new name. If yours is, and the table still reads Date, Transaction, Money out, Money in and Balance, it should read the same way, and the three checks tell you if it doesn’t.

What happens if I drop Metro statements with months missing between them?

They still open as one account, and we mark where the months fail to meet. We tried exactly that with two statements from one charity’s account, nineteen months apart: each passed its own checks, and the join between them showed as a single break, because the later one opens on a balance the earlier one never closed on. With the missing months dropped in as well, each month is checked to open where the one before it closed.

Can I get a missing Metro statement on paper instead?

Yes. Metro’s help says a business customer can order a copy by phone on 0345 08 08 508, and that it takes 10 working days to arrive by post, where an online statement downloads at once. The Community Current Account details list a charge for each duplicate. A paper copy has to be scanned before we can read it, and we have not yet tested a scanned Metro statement, so the download is the better route.

Privacy, scans and price work the same for every bank, and the home page answers them.
