Citizens statement to CSV

Drop the Citizens PDF as you downloaded it. It is converted on your computer, and we compare the totals with the ones Citizens printed and check that the rows carry the opening balance to the closing one. Then download it for your accounting software or a spreadsheet.

Getting the PDF out of Citizens

  1. Once logged in to Online Banking, click the "DOCUMENT CENTER" tab.
  2. Use the Filter to select the account and the timeframe of the statement.
  3. Save or download the statement.

Citizens’ online banking FAQ puts 18 months of statements there, and that an older one is ordered through the "Contact Us" link. Its Digital Terms and Conditions allow as much as 7 years of eligible statements, so look in the Document Center before ordering.

On a business profile the Super User, generally the owner, can authorise Sub Users with their own IDs and passwords, and a Sub User can at least view digital statements for the accounts they are given.

What a Citizens statement looks like, and what we do with it

Page one sets out a Balance Calculation as a sum, Previous Balance, minus Checks, minus Debits, plus Deposits & Credit, equals Current Balance, and then TRANSACTION DETAILS in three parts: Checks, Debits and Deposits & Credits. Debits and Deposits & Credits print Date, Amount and Description in that order, every amount unsigned and every row dated month and day, oldest first. A Daily Balance table ends the account, followed by the Checking Account Balance Worksheet and the check images.

The period is set over two lines, "Beginning" and a full date above "through" and the closing date, and the rows are dated 01/03 with no year.
We read the two lines as one period and give each row its year from it.
Checks are printed two to a line with the check number first, then the amount, then the date, and an asterisk straight after a number marks a check out of numeric sequence.
We read each half as its own check and keep the number, asterisk included, as the description.
The Balance Calculation lists Checks and Debits as two separate figures, and a running summary down the right margin repeats them beside each section.
We add Checks and Debits together to compare with our money out, and keep the margin apart from the table so none of its figures becomes a row.
An amount under a dollar is printed without its leading zero, written .01.
We read it as 0.01, so a one-cent account verification is not lost.
The last page shows the paid checks as images, each captioned with its number, date and amount.
We leave those captions out, so no check is counted twice.

What this page is based on

A single statement: one month of Business Green Checking from January 2025, belonging to a nonprofit. It holds a few dozen rows, checks, electronic bill payments, tax payments, mobile deposits and card-processor deposits among them. Our money in matched Deposits & Credit, our money out matched Checks plus Debits, and the rows, netted, turned the Previous Balance into the Current Balance. One statement proves the layout, not every Citizens account, so treat the checks on your own file as the test.

Clearly Better Business Checking, Business Advisor Checking and Citizens Analysis Business Checking may lay their statements out differently, and none of them, nor the personal One Deposit Checking, has been read here. Business credit cards such as the Everyday Points Business Mastercard keep their statements on a separate card site, none of which we hold.

Once it is converted, the import steps for each accounting package are the same for every bank.

Questions

A check I wrote shows under Debits, not Checks. Why?

Citizens notes under its Debits heading that they may include checks processed electronically by the payee or merchant. Such a check reaches you as a debit, with the payee’s description, and that is how we export it: a row of money out without a check number. Only the checks Citizens lists under Checks carry their numbers into the file.

Our savings comes on the checking statement. Will that convert?

We cannot say yet. Citizens’ business fees and features guide lets savings, money market and other business accounts be combined into the checking account’s monthly statement, but the statement we tested held one account. Its Digital Terms and Conditions also warn that combined statements may not be available online.

Where are our Citizens business credit card statements?

On a site of their own. Citizens’ business card administrator guide says that card online banking holds up to a year of PDF statements, below the "view all transactions" option. We hold no Citizens card statement to test against, so if you convert one, watch the checks closely.

Privacy, scans and price work the same for every bank, and the home page answers them.
