BOQ statement to CSV

Drop the BOQ PDF as you downloaded it. It is converted on your computer, and we check every row against the running balance, compare the totals with the ones BOQ printed and check that the rows carry the opening balance to the closing one. Then download it for your accounting software or a spreadsheet.

Getting the PDF out of BOQ

BOQ keeps eStatements in Internet Banking as PDFs that can be downloaded, printed or saved at no charge, and keeps at least seven years of them for every account linked to your Internet Banking.

Your bookkeeper or accountant can fetch them too, once you give them Internet Banking access as a delegated user, but a delegated user sees eStatements only for the accounts whose transaction history they can view.

An account still on paper statements is switched under Accounts, then Statement Preferences.

From BOQ’s own help: eStatements and statement preferences FAQs.

What a BOQ statement looks like, and what we do with it

The first page holds the whole month for one account: a Statement Summary panel at the top right, then a table headed Posting Date, Transaction Details, Debit, Credit and Balance. Rows run oldest first, every balance carries its own cr, and the next page is BOQ’s notices about security, privacy and complaints, with no transactions on it.

Balances end in a lowercase cr, and the Statement Summary marks its total debits dr, each figure after a dollar sign and a space.
We read cr as a balance in credit, so every row is checked against the balance beside it.
Dates carry no year and are joined by hyphens, 03-Feb. The year stands alone above the first row, the period reads "From 01-Feb-2023 to 28-Feb-2023", and June is spelled out, 26-June.
We read the month by name and give each row its year from the period, so 26-June becomes 2023-06-26.
A Pay Anyone payment wraps its internet banking receipt number, Ib2- and eight digits, onto a second line.
We join it to the payment, and the payee comes out as the name after "Pay Anyone To".
The table opens with an Opening Balance row and ends with Closing Balance and a "Total Debits & Credits" line, beside a Statement Summary that also prints Credit Interest FYTD.
We check our money in and money out against the printed totals, and that the rows reach the closing balance. Credit Interest FYTD covers the whole financial year, so we leave it alone.

What this page is based on

Six monthly Business Cheque Account statements from two community organisations: five months in a row from 2023 and one from December 2024. Every one passed all three checks, including the three months with not a single debit, where the Debit total reads 0.00. The five 2023 months, opened together, joined into one account with no gap, each month opening on the balance the one before closed on.

We have not seen a BOQ personal account statement, a BOQ credit card statement, or a statement printed from the myBOQ app, so this page does not vouch for them. If yours is one of those, the checks still flag any amount that does not add up.

Once it is converted, the import steps for each accounting package are the same for every bank.

Questions

Can I convert a whole financial year of BOQ statements at once?

Yes. Download each month from Internet Banking, which keeps at least seven years of them, and drop all twelve together. One account’s months open as one statement, and we check that each month opens on the balance the last one closed on, so a missing month shows up as a break rather than as rows that quietly don’t add up.

Does the Credit Interest FYTD figure end up in my file?

No. It is the interest for the financial year so far, printed in the Statement Summary, not a transaction. The interest paid this month is its own Interest row in the table, and that row is exported like any other.

My BOQ statement shows dr after a balance. What does that mean?

BOQ prints cr after a balance in credit and dr after a debit figure, as on the Total Debits line of the Statement Summary. We read a figure ending in dr as negative, which is what an overdrawn balance would be. None of the BOQ statements we tested was ever overdrawn, though, so a dr balance in the table itself has not yet been seen on a real one.

Can my bookkeeper download the statements instead of me?

Yes, if you make them a delegated user in BOQ Internet Banking. BOQ’s FAQs say a delegated user sees eStatements for the accounts whose transaction history they can view. They can then convert the statements on their own computer, and the PDFs never pass through us.

Privacy, scans and price work the same for every bank, and the home page answers them.
