Barclays statement to CSV
Drop the Barclays PDF as you downloaded it. It is converted on your computer, and we check every row against the running balance and compare the totals with the ones Barclays printed. Then download it for your accounting software or a spreadsheet.
Getting the PDF out of Barclays
- In Online Banking, select Manage accounts, then Statements and documents.
- Save the statement with the PDF icon in the toolbar, or from the File menu.
In the Barclays app, a business account has Statements on its home page.
Another Barclays help page sends you to My Barclays documents, under your profile, where a document from any account can be viewed, downloaded and printed. If one route isn’t on your screen, try the other.
Online Statements can be viewed for up to 7 years while the account is open, and for up to 5 years after it closes if you still bank with Barclays.
From Barclays’s own help: Print or save your online statement, Online Statements, How long is my statement available for viewing online?.
What a Barclays statement looks like, and what we do with it
Page one, Your Business accounts at a glance, lists the balance of every business account on the statement date, savings included, and holds no transactions. The Community Account follows under Date, Description, Money out £, Money in £ and Balance £, with money out to the left of money in, and the rows run oldest first. Dates in the table read 12 Jun, with no year, which comes from the period at the head of the panel, and a Total Payments/Receipts line sits under the last row.
- An "At a glance" panel runs down the right of the transactions, its Start balance, Money out, Money in and End balance level with the rows.
- We read the panel apart from the table, so its figures never join a transaction, and compare our money out and money in with it.
- A payment runs over two or three lines: the type and the payee, the rest of the payee’s name if it is long, then a line starting "Ref:".
- The lines become one description, with the Ref: line kept at its end.
- A day’s date is printed once, beside its first transaction.
- The rows under it take the same date.
- The table opens with a Start Balance row and closes with Balance carried forward.
- They give us the opening and closing balances; neither is exported.
What this page is based on
A parish council’s Community Account statement for one month of 2020, four pages cut from the council’s reconciliation pack. Each of its rows held against the running balance, and our money out and money in matched the At a glance panel to the penny, on a month with nothing paid in. Alongside it, a scanned page of Everyday Saver transactions printed in 2016 and published as an example in a university’s visa guidance: read by OCR, every row agreed with its Current Balance.
Barclaycard for business statements, reports from Barclays.Net or iPortal, and the Charity Impact Account that Barclays now offers charities are outside what we have seen. So is any personal account statement downloaded as a PDF: our only personal page was that scan.
Once it is converted, the import steps for each accounting package are the same for every bank.
Questions
Our Barclays statement also lists our savings account. Will that be converted?
Only if its transactions are in the file. In the statement we tested, the first page gave the balance of a Business Premium Account beside the Community Account’s, but only the Community Account’s transactions followed, so that is all that came out, and the savings balance played no part in its checks. If your savings account has a statement of its own, drop that PDF too; it gets a tab of its own.
Will a scanned Barclays statement convert?
The one we tried did: a printed page of Everyday Saver transactions, scanned with a bank stamp and numbered labels and arrows laid over it. OCR read every row, and each agreed with the Current Balance column. Its interest rows run over four lines, interest earned, tax, interest paid net and the period, and the figure we take is the net one in the Money In column. A clean PDF from Online Banking is still the safer start.
We need a Barclays statement from years ago. Where is it?
Barclays says it uploaded electronic copies of statements from July 2013, and that Online Statements stay viewable for up to 7 years while the account is open. A paper copy is charged for, as the Community Account tariff lists, so save the PDFs while they are online.
Privacy, scans and price work the same for every bank, and the home page answers them.
