ANZ statement to CSV

Drop the ANZ PDF as you downloaded it. It is converted on your computer, and we check every row against the running balance and compare the totals with the ones ANZ printed. Then download it for your accounting software or a spreadsheet.

Getting the PDF out of ANZ

  1. Log in to ANZ Internet Banking and select your account.
  2. Click View statements on the left, then choose the account from the dropdown list.
  3. Click Download, which opens the statement in a new browser window, and save it from there.

Where your statements don’t cover the dates you need, View statements also has Order a replacement statement, where you pick the account, one or more date ranges and how it is delivered. ANZ says it takes 3-5 business days by mail or two business days by email.

If a PDF statement won’t open in the browser, ANZ suggests the latest Adobe Reader, with pop-up blockers off and JavaScript on.

Users of ANZ Internet Banking for Business cannot switch off paper statements.

What a ANZ statement looks like, and what we do with it

Page one is ANZ’s ACCOUNT AT A GLANCE: Opening Balance, Total Deposits, Total Withdrawals and Closing Balance, with no transactions. The table starts on page two under Date, Transaction Details, Withdrawals ($), Deposits ($) and Balance ($), so money out sits to the left of money in, and amounts and balances are plain figures, with no CR or sign. The first row is an OPENING BALANCE and the rest follow in date order, over a period that runs from late one month to late the next.

Dates carry no year, written 31 MAY. The year stands alone at the top of the Date column, and the period is spelled out in capitals on page one, with the full month at each end and TO between them.
We give each row its year from the period, and write every date in full, year first.
Every empty money cell holds the word "blank" in tiny white type, there for screen readers.
We drop it, so it reaches neither a description nor an amount column that should be empty.
Each transaction runs over two lines: the kind (TRANSFER, PAYMENT) with the amounts, then who it was from or to.
We join both lines into one description, so a payment reads PAYMENT TO followed by the payee.
The table ends with TOTALS AT END OF PAGE and TOTALS AT END OF PERIOD, and a Fee Summary with its own totals follows.
We check our money out and money in against the period totals, and read nothing from the fee table.

What this page is based on

Three files from one organisation’s ANZ accounts: a Business Essentials statement from 2021, a Business Premium Saver statement from 2020, and a file binding six consecutive Business Premium Saver statements from 2019. Every row matched the running balance, and our money in and money out matched the TOTALS AT END OF PERIOD line to the cent. The bound file read straight through as one account across all six statements, each month picking up from the balance the previous month ended on.

An ANZ Transaction Report, the 30 to 120 day listing ANZ offers when statements fall short, is not a statement and we have not tried one. No ANZ credit card statement or personal account statement has reached the parser either.

Once it is converted, the import steps for each accounting package are the same for every bank.

Questions

Why doesn’t the Fee Summary cover the same dates as my ANZ statement?

The Fee Summary follows ANZ’s monthly fee cycle, which ends before the statement does, and the statement itself warns that the two cycles may not reconcile. On a statement ending in late June, it listed May’s fees. We read nothing from the Fee Summary. A fee charged within the period is its own row in the table, and that row is the one your file gets.

I have several months of ANZ statements in one PDF. Do I need to split it?

No. One of our test files was six monthly Business Premium Saver statements bound together, each with its own summary page, fee pages and notices between the tables. We read the tables straight through as one account, and every row still matched the running balance.

My ANZ statements don’t cover the dates I need. What else can I get?

In Internet Banking, View statements offers a Transaction Report for the last 30, 60, 90 or 120 days, or Order a replacement statement for the date ranges you choose, both described in ANZ’s statements help. What we have tested are statements, not Transaction Reports, so if you convert a report, look over the result before you import it.

Privacy, scans and price work the same for every bank, and the home page answers them.
