ANZ New Zealand statement to CSV
Drop the ANZ New Zealand PDF as you downloaded it. It is converted on your computer, and we check every row against the running balance and compare the totals with the ones ANZ New Zealand printed. Then download it for your accounting software or a spreadsheet.
Getting the PDF out of ANZ New Zealand
- In ANZ Internet Banking for businesses, select Documents.

Internet Banking keeps up to seven years of statements to view and download, but only 24 months of transaction history.
Statements for a closed account are not there: ANZ asks you to contact it for those.

What a ANZ New Zealand statement looks like, and what we do with it
Page one, "Your accounts at a glance", is a summary, and the table comes after it under the account’s name, headed Date, Transaction type and details, Withdrawals, Deposits and Balance. Each row starts with a two-letter code such as BP or DC, keeps withdrawals and deposits in their own columns with no sign, and carries its own balance. The rows begin at a dated Opening balance line and go forward a day at a time. A Select statement fits the table on page one.
- Page one comes in two forms: an Account information panel with the period and both balances, or a list of today’s balances followed by Upcoming automatic payments, each with a frequency, a payment date after the statement ends and an amount.
- Nothing on page one becomes a row. We start reading at the table, whether it begins on page one or page two.
- Rows are dated with a day and a short month, 22 Apr, never a year, and a period that ends in January starts on 31 Dec of the year before.
- Every row is placed in the year its day falls in within the period, so the January rows of such a statement land in the new year.
- The details sit in fixed fields for type, other party, particulars, code and reference. The other party stops at 20 characters, and a long entry is cut at the field edge and runs on in the next field, as in "Credit inter" "est transfer".
- The fields are joined in order into one description. A word the statement cut in two stays cut, because nothing on the page says where it was split.
- The table closes with Totals at end of page and Totals at end of period, each giving withdrawals, deposits and the balance, then a line on the available credit at the closing date and a key to the type codes.
- Our money out and money in are compared with the period line, which covers the whole statement and not just the last page. The available credit line and the key give no rows.
What this page is based on
Four statements from four community groups, attached to their grant requests in council agendas: three for a Business Premium Current Account and one for a Select account, each covering a month or two between December 2023 and July 2024. Every row of all four agreed with its balance, and each one’s withdrawals and deposits matched its Totals at end of period to the cent. Being four different groups’ accounts, none of them joined another.
ANZ’s business cards, the Visa Business CashBack, Visa Business Low Rate and Visa Business Airpoints among them, print statements of their own that we have not had. Nor have we seen anything from ANZ Direct Online, the bank’s other service for businesses and clubs.
Once it is converted, the import steps for each accounting package are the same for every bank.
Questions
Why does an ANZ statement date a payment a day or two after I made it?
ANZ prints the reason under the table: payment dates on its statements are business days only, even when the payment was made or received on a weekend or holiday before. We export the date the statement prints, which is the one your ledger will be matched against, so a weekend payment shows up on the next business day.
Where is the withholding tax on my ANZ interest?
On its own row. The Select statement we tested prints GROSS CREDIT INTEREST PAID under Deposits and WITHHOLDING TAX PAID under Withdrawals on the same day, and both come out as transactions, so your ledger holds the interest before tax and, on a line of its own, the tax withheld. The three Business Premium Current Account statements show the gross interest line alone.
What do BP, AP and DC at the start of a description mean?
They are ANZ’s transaction types, listed with their meanings under the table: AP Automatic Payment, BP Bill Payment, DC Direct Credit, DD Direct Debit, EP EFTPOS Transaction and eight more. The code stays first in the description because it tells a bill payment from a direct debit, and a payee rule can match on it.
ANZ Internet Banking can export transactions itself. What does the statement add?
Its export covers only the 24 months of transaction history Internet Banking holds, while statements go back seven years. ANZ’s own guide also warns that an Excel export may contain unprocessed transactions and is not recommended for an accounting system. A statement is a closed period with totals printed on it, and each row is tested against them before you download anything.
